Vulnerable Work Permit
A Vulnerable Work Permit is a special type of open work permit available to foreign workers in Canada who are experiencing, or are at risk of experiencing, abuse in their workplace. Abuse may include physical, sexual, psychological, or financial mistreatment, as well as situations where an employer fails to meet legal obligations such as paying wages or providing safe working conditions.
This permit allows eligible workers to leave an abusive employer without losing their legal status in Canada. Unlike employer-specific work permits, a vulnerable work permit is open, meaning the individual can work for most employers in Canada while they seek a safer and more stable job.
Applicants must provide evidence showing a risk of abuse or mistreatment. This may include personal statements, communication records, employment documents, or third-party reports. Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis, and the process is designed to protect workers’ rights and well-being.
The vulnerable work permit does not automatically lead to permanent residence, but it can allow workers time and flexibility to stabilize their situation, secure lawful employment, and explore other immigration options. It plays an important role in safeguarding temporary foreign workers and upholding labour standards in Canada.
