Study Permit Extension

study ext.

A Study Permit Extension allows international students to continue studying in Canada beyond the expiry date of their current study permit. Students must apply for an extension before their permit expires if they require additional time to complete their program, are changing academic levels, or are enrolled in a new program of study at a designated learning institution (DLI).

To be eligible for a study permit extension, applicants must continue to meet the original study permit conditions. This includes maintaining full-time enrollment at a recognized institution, demonstrating sufficient financial resources to support tuition and living expenses, and complying with any work authorization limits. Students must also provide updated documents such as proof of enrollment, academic transcripts, and a valid passport.

Applications for extension are typically submitted from within Canada. If a student applies before their current permit expires, they may be allowed to remain in Canada under maintained status while awaiting a decision. During this period, students must continue to follow the conditions of their previous permit.

A study permit extension does not automatically extend other documents such as a temporary resident visa (TRV) or electronic travel authorization (eTA). Students who plan to travel outside Canada may need to renew these documents separately.

Failing to apply for an extension before a study permit expires can result in loss of legal status. In some cases, students may be eligible to restore their status within a specific timeframe by meeting additional requirements.

Applying for a study permit extension on time is essential for maintaining lawful student status in Canada.
