Study Permit
A Study Permit allows international students to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. It is not a visa but a legal document issued by the Canadian government that authorizes foreign nationals to pursue academic, vocational, or professional education in Canada for the duration of their program. Most international students require a study permit before entering Canada.
To be eligible for a study permit, applicants must have an acceptance letter from a recognized Canadian institution, demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation, and show proof that they will leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay. Applicants must also meet medical and security requirements as part of the application process.
A study permit typically allows students to work part-time during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks, subject to government regulations. This provides students with an opportunity to gain Canadian work experience while studying. In some cases, graduates may be eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), which can allow them to work in Canada after completing their studies.
Study permits are usually issued for the length of the study program plus an additional period to prepare for departure or apply for further status. Students must maintain full-time enrollment and comply with all permit conditions. Failure to meet these conditions may result in loss of status.
A study permit can serve as an important first step for individuals seeking education and future opportunities in Canada.
